Defender Build - Cross Bars

With a truck like a D90 you want to take it surfing, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, or biking. It’s a truck built for adventure. But that means it needs to haul your gear. That can be a bit tricky with a soft top. I fixed the first problem by getting a custom fabricated safari rack that does not impact the soft top. To read about that project go here. The platform is great for roof top tents, cargo boxes, and kayaking…..but not so great for skis, snowboards, and surfboards. I wanted to find a solution to have cross bars mounted to the safari platform.

I ended up getting some Yakima HD rails and believe it or not the holes in the rails lined up perfectly with the perforated floor of the roof rack. I then got some Yakima launch pads that mount to the rails and then some Skyline towers. The final piece was to get some HD cross bars. The Skyline towers and cross bars can simply unclip from the rails in minutes for a sleek profile when you don’t need the cross bars. Is this setup overkill….yes just like the rest of the build :)
